What Is the Northern Territory Solar Battery Scheme?
The Home and Business Battery Scheme is a Northern Territory Government initiative aimed at supporting renewable energy adoption. It provides financial support to residents, businesses, and not-for-profits for installing eligible battery systems to store solar power.
From 1 December 2024 until Monday 30 June 2025, eligible applicants can access a grant of $400 per kilowatt hour (kWh) of usable battery capacity, up to a maximum of $12,000.
See our ultimate guide to all major solar & battery rebates in Australia for more.
Who Is Eligible?
You can apply if you are:
- A registered homeowner in the Northern Territory
- A registered NT-based business
- A not-for-profit or community organisation with premises in the NT
Each property and owner is eligible for one application. If you own both a home and a business, you can apply separately for each. However, previous recipients of the same grant are not eligible for a second round.
What Does the Scheme Cover?
The grant can be used for:
- Installation of a solar photovoltaic (PV) system with an eligible battery and inverter
- Installation of an eligible battery and inverter only, if solar PV is already in place
You cannot use the grant to install solar panels and inverters unless a battery is also installed.
Battery and Inverter Requirements
Battery systems must meet the following requirements:
- Be listed on the Clean Energy Council’s approved battery list
- Be virtual power plant (VPP) capable
- Be compatible with your existing inverter, or you may incur additional costs
Visit the Clean Energy Council website for the list of approved battery systems.
How to Apply
- Check the full terms and conditions on the NT Government website
- Get a quote from a certified installer registered with the scheme
- Apply online through the GrantsNT portal
- If approved, you’ll receive a voucher for partial payment
- Complete installation within six months of voucher approval
The system must not be installed before you receive formal approval.
Compare quotes from up to 7 installers in your area now.
Voucher Value and Use
Each voucher is calculated at $400 per kWh of usable battery capacity, up to a cap of $12,000 (exclusive of GST). The voucher is paid directly to your installer upon project completion.
For example:
- A 10kWh battery = $4,000 grant
- A 30kWh battery = $12,000 grant (maximum)
You will need to cover any remaining installation costs not covered by the grant.
After Installation
Once the system is installed and certified, you provide the installer with the voucher. The NT Government will then pay the voucher amount directly to the installer. You are responsible for any costs that exceed the voucher’s value.
What Happens With Excess Electricity?
Excess solar energy will either be used to charge your battery or exported to the grid. Starting 1 July 2025, the NT Government will introduce a feed-in tariff of 18.66 cents per kWh for electricity exported between 3pm and 9pm.
This feed-in credit will appear on your electricity bill.

Final Thoughts
The Home and Business Battery Scheme is one of Australia’s most generous clean energy programs, offering up to $12,000 in support. Whether you’re a homeowner or a business owner, this is a powerful opportunity to reduce energy costs, improve grid resilience, and embrace a more sustainable future.
Applications are open until November 2025 or until funding is fully subscribed.
Can NT Battery Scheme Combined with the Federal Battery Rebate?
Yes. From July 1, 2025, the Australian Government will launch the Cheaper Home Batteries Program, a federal solar battery rebate offering up to 30% off the cost of eligible battery systems. Northern Territory homeowners, businesses, and community facilities may combine this rebate with the NT Home & Business Battery Scheme—unlocking substantial savings on solar battery installations.
Key Facts:
- Up to $372 per usable kilowatt-hour (kWh) of battery capacity
- Applies to systems between 5 kWh and 50 kWh
- Not means-tested — available to all eligible property owners
- Stackable with the NT battery rebate
- Batteries installed before July 1 can qualify if switched on after the program begins
Delivered through the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES), this federal rebate is part of a $2.3 billion initiative supporting over one million battery installations by 2030.
