Eligible households can access up to $3,800 in rebates (or up to $7,500 when combined with the federal battery rebate) and up to $10,000 in interest-free loans to install home batteries, helping reduce power bills and strengthen WA’s electricity grid.
Note: There are 100,000 rebates available statewide. As of late 2025, the WA Government expects the scheme to remain available until around 2027 or until allocations are exhausted. The WA rebate can also be combined with the Federal Battery Rebate Guide, subject to eligibility.
The rebate is expected to significantly improve the solar battery payback period for customers in WA.

Overview of the WA Home Battery Rebate Program
The WA Government has committed $337 million to help households install battery storage systems. Under the Residential Battery Scheme, eligible homeowners on the Synergy and Horizon Power networks can access:
- Up to $1,300 rebate for Synergy customers ($130/kWh for up to 10 kWh)
- Up to $3,800 rebate for Horizon Power customers ($380/kWh for up to 10 kWh)
- Interest-free loans up to $10,000 for households with less than $210,000 income
The rebate is delivered as an upfront point-of-sale discount applied by an approved vendor at the time of installation.
You are not limited to a 10 kWh battery, but rebates apply only to the first 10 kWh of usable capacity, and only one rebate is available per property.

Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for the rebate or loan, you must:
- Be 18+ and a permanent resident of Australia
- Live in WA and be a Synergy or Horizon Power customer
- Own or rent the property with appropriate permissions
- Install new or replacement batteries with minimum 5kWh usable capacity
- Use approved vendors accredited by Plenti (the scheme administrator) and approved products that meet WA network requirements.
- Connect the battery to an approved Virtual Power Plant (VPP) for a minimum participation period of two years.
- Batteries must appear on the Clean Energy Council (CEC) approved battery list
- Inverters must be listed on the Synergy or Horizon Power Supported Solutions List (depending on location)
- Only one rebate-eligible battery system per property is permitted
Note: Batteries installed before 1 July 2025 are not eligible.
Loan approvals are conditional. Installation must be completed within six months of approval, otherwise the application may need to be resubmitted.
Late repayments may incur a $10 per week fee, capped at $120 per year.

- Landlords with long-term tenants
- Renters with landlord permission
- Home businesses (if primarily residential)

Virtual Power Plant Requirements
To qualify, all batteries must be enrolled in a Virtual Power Plant (VPP):
- Must be internet-connected
- Must be able to respond to grid signals
- Participation required for both rebates and loans
- In the Synergy network, customers must join Synergy’s VPP or an alternative VPP that meets WA Government eligibility criteria (e.g. Plico).
- VPP participation is required for a minimum of two years. After this period, customers may choose to opt out of the VPP without affecting their rebate eligibility.
- Installation must occur within six months of conditional approval
How to Apply
Your installer or approved vendor applies on your behalf – you do not apply directly to the WA Government. The approved vendor submits your application via Plenti, which administers the rebate and loan on behalf of the WA Government.
Step-by-step:
- Confirm you’re eligible (see above)
- Request quotes from approved WA installers
- Choose battery + VPP-compatible system
- Installer submits your application via Plenti
- Loan (if applicable) undergoes credit check
- Battery is installed and connected to VPP
- Rebate is applied upfront; loan repayments begin after installation

Combining WA and Federal Rebates
Yes – WA customers can stack the WA Battery Rebate with the Federal Government’s Cheaper Home Batteries Program.

Choose batteries that are:
- On the WA Approved List
- VPP-compatible
- Backed by 10+ year warranties
- Positively reviewed by Australian customers

Why Are Horizon Customers Getting More?

Horizon Power services regional and remote WA, where electricity infrastructure is more expensive and less reliable. Higher rebates reflect the greater cost of batteries in these off-grid or microgrid locations, offering improved energy security and cost savings.
What Can the Interest-Free Loan Cover?

Alongside rebates, the scheme includes means-tested loans to help eligible households afford a system. These loans can be used for:
- Battery-only systems
- Combined solar + battery packages
- New or replacement solar panels (only when bundled with a battery)
What Are VPPs and Why Do I Need To Join One?
A Virtual Power Plant (VPP) is a group of interconnected home batteries that can be controlled remotely by a VPP operator to support the electricity grid. Typically homeowners are paid a fee or offered a bonus feed in tariff to participate in VPPs making it more worthwhile than using their energy within their home.
To participate in a VPP a battery must:
- Be connected to the internet
- Be able to respond to signals from the grid
The company who installs your battery will be able to support you in connecting to a VPP.
The intent of the WA government is for the 100,000 batteries they intend to subsidise to help stablise the WA electricity grids along with benefit individual homes. Batteries operating in a VPP can help stabilise volatility in voltage and frequency in the grid and handle spikes in demand. Over
Final Thoughts
The WA Battery Rebate offers a rare opportunity to secure clean, affordable, resilient energy at home. Only 100,000 rebates will be issued statewide, and demand is expected to be high as households seek to combine state and federal incentives to reduce battery payback periods.
