Rinnai Heat Pumps: Independent Review

Rinnai Hot Water Heat Pumps

Note: Solar Choice is not associated with Rinnai or any heat pump brand and has no financial or other incentives to promote any product brand over another.

At a Glance: Solar Choice Heat Pump Score: 3.75 Out of 5.

Scoring is based on our heat pump scorecard, which is consistently applied to each brand and heat pump model available on the Australian market.

$$$ Price: The Rinnai Enviroflo 265L is positioned in the mid-range of the Australian heat pump market. Typical equipment-only pricing is generally between $3,000 and $3,600, depending on retailer and location. This places the system in the mid-range price category under the Solar Choice Scorecard.

  • Company Backing and Trustworthiness – 5/5: Rinnai is a long-established appliance manufacturer with over 50 years of operations in Australia. The company operates its Australian headquarters in Keysborough, Victoria, and maintains a national sales and service network. Rinnai manufactures some products locally in Victoria and offers a broad range of heating, hot water, and climate control products, which contributes to a strong brand credibility score.
  • Warranty Offer 3/5: The Enviroflo 265L includes 7 years on the cylinder and 5 years on refrigeration components, with shorter coverage on minor parts. This provides solid protection for the major system components, although some smaller parts have shorter warranty coverage which prevents it from receiving full marks.
  • Customer Reviews – 4/5: Solar Choice currently has a limited number of customer reviews, but the available feedback is positive and supports a strong rating score. The sample size is still small, so buyers should treat this as encouraging early feedback rather than a large body of evidence.
  • Functionality 3/5: The Enviroflo 265L exceeds the 10 W/L heating performance benchmark, includes Wi-Fi app control and LCD display, and operates at around 46 dB(A). However, the system does not support multiple programmable heating schedules, which limits its functionality score under the Solar Choice criteria.

Rinnai Australia Company Background

Rinnai Australia Pty Ltd is the Australian subsidiary of Japan-based Rinnai Corporation, a global manufacturer specialising in heating, hot water, and climate control appliances. The company has operated in Australia for more than 50 years and is widely recognised for its range of residential and commercial hot water and heating solutions.

Rinnai maintains its Australian headquarters in Keysborough, Victoria, and operates a national distribution and service network across the country. The company also maintains manufacturing facilities in Victoria, which support local production and product development for a range of hot water and heating technologies.

Rinnai’s product portfolio includes a broad range of well-known product lines such as Rinnai Infinity continuous flow hot water systems, Hotflo storage systems, Energysaver heaters, and Enviroflo heat pump hot water systems. These products are designed to serve a wide range of residential and commercial applications, from basic household hot water supply to more advanced heating and climate control solutions.

Rinnai Heat Pump Range Available in Australia

Rinnai’s heat pump range is broad enough to cover most Australian homes, from smaller households through to larger families with high hot water demand. In simple terms, the 180L A Series suits smaller homes, the GR Series and Enviroflo 265L are the core family-sized options, the AR Series suits larger households, and the Enviroflo S split systems are the premium end of the range for buyers who want more installation flexibility or more capacity.

For most buyers, tank size matters more than model name. As a rough guide, 180L suits smaller households, 250L to 265L suits many standard family homes, and 300L or more is usually the better fit for larger households or heavier hot water use. If you want an all-in-one unit, the GR, 265L and AR models are the main options. If installation flexibility, quieter positioning, or larger capacity matters more, the split-system Enviroflo S range is the one to look at first.

How Much Do Rinnai Heat Pump Hot Water Systems Cost?

Rinnai’s current heat pump range spans from compact systems for smaller households through to high-capacity split systems designed for larger homes. As a result, pricing varies depending on tank size, system type, and overall feature set.

The current range includes the Hotflo Plus 250L, Enviroflo 180L A Series, Enviroflo GR Series, Enviroflo 265L, Enviroflo AR Series, and the newer Enviroflo S split-system models. Some models are sold through exclusive trade channels, with the Hotflo Plus 250L exclusive to Plumbing Plus and the Enviroflo 265L exclusive to Tradelink.

The table below outlines indicative equipment-only price ranges, excluding installation and rebates. These figures are based on market observations and should be treated as a guide rather than official manufacturer pricing.

Important Notes on Pricing

Prices are indicative only and may vary depending on the installer, retailer, freight, and location. The figures above exclude installation costs and any available rebates.

Eligible households may be able to significantly reduce upfront costs through Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) and selected state-based heat pump rebate programs. These incentives can materially change the final installed price, so it is worth checking what is available in your state before making a decision.

Can Rebates Reduce These Prices?

Yes. With generous rebates in states like Victoria, NSW, and Queensland, eligible households can reduce upfront costs by $1,000 or more. Check our guide to heat pump rebates to see what you qualify for, or try our savings calculator to estimate your payback period.

Rinnai Heat Pump Warranty Terms and Conditions

Rinnai’s warranty coverage for the Enviroflo 265L heat pump varies by component and installation type. For a standard residential installation, the current official Rinnai Enviroflo 265L warranty booklet sets out the following coverage.

ComponentParts CoverageLabour Coverage
Hot Water Cylinder7 years5 years
Refrigeration Components5 years5 years
Other Components1 year1 year

The official warranty booklet defines refrigeration components broadly and also makes clear that shorter cover applies to other minor parts such as sensors, thermostats, valves, electric heating elements, and anodes.

Key Warranty Notes

Warranty coverage is conditional on the system being installed and used in accordance with Rinnai’s requirements. As with most heat pump hot water warranties, coverage depends on correct installation, compliance with relevant plumbing and electrical standards, and operation within the manufacturer’s specified conditions. Buyers should review the full Rinnai heat pump warranty information page and the model-specific Enviroflo 265L warranty booklet PDF before purchase.

Rinnai’s current Enviroflo 265L brochure also notes an extended inner storage cylinder warranty offer linked to participation in the Rinnai scheduled service program, with the detailed terms set out in the official warranty booklet.

Because the cylinder and refrigeration system receive strong coverage but other components are covered for only 1 year, the overall warranty is solid but not best-in-class across every part of the system. For buyers comparing brands, that makes the Rinnai offer competitive on major components while more limited on smaller ancillary parts.

Rinnai Heat Pump

Pros & Cons

The main model assessed here is the Rinnai Enviroflo 265L (EHPG265VMT), a Tradelink-exclusive heat pump designed for households of up to 5 people.

Pros

  • Uses R290 refrigerant, which has a very low global warming potential.
  • Backed by a well-established brand with more than 50 years in Australia.
  • Includes built-in Wi-Fi and supports solar PV integration.
  • Strong warranty on major components, including the cylinder and refrigeration system.
  • Early customer feedback on Solar Choice is positive.

Cons

  • Exclusive to Tradelink, which limits buying access.
  • At 46 dB(A), it is not especially quiet by Solar Choice scorecard standards.
  • No clear evidence of multiple programmable heating schedules.
  • Some components only have a 1 year warranty cover.
  • Customer review volume is still limited.

Verdict: Are Rinnai Heat Pumps Worth It?

The Rinnai Enviroflo 265L will appeal to homeowners who want a heat pump from a well-known brand with a long history in Australia. It has the core features most buyers now expect, including Wi-Fi control, solar PV compatibility, and a modern R290 refrigerant system.

Its strongest selling points are brand trust, solid warranty cover on the main components, and a feature set that should suit many standard family homes. For buyers who want a straightforward heat pump from an established manufacturer, it is a credible option.

The trade-offs are that it is only available through Tradelink, it is not one of the quieter models on the market, and it does not appear to offer the kind of advanced timer control that may matter for households trying to maximise solar self-consumption or fine-tune off-peak usage.

Overall, the Rinnai Enviroflo 265L looks like a reasonable mid-range choice for households that value brand backing and core functionality over advanced control features. As always, buyers should compare quotes, warranty terms, installer quality, and rebate eligibility before making a final decision.
