Pros and Cons of the SPT Phantom Heat Pumps
Pros
- Low retail cost (under $2,500)
- Positive customer reviews
- WiFi smart control
- 10-year tank warranty
Cons
- New company with limited market history
- No multi-timer scheduling
- Does not meet quiet operation threshold under standard testing rules (1m)
- Sub-10W/L heating power and hot water recovery times
Heating Power
The unit heats at 8.5 watts per litre—less than the recommended 10W/L. In practice, this means slower recovery after showers or high use, so it may not keep up with large family demands without backup heating.
Timer Limitations
Systems with multiple heating schedules help you optimise for off-peak electricity. This unit’s single timer limits cost-saving potential and may not align well with family routines.
Noise Disclosure
A rating of 44 dBA sounds quiet, but without knowing if it was tested at 1 metre (the industry standard), homeowners can’t be sure it won’t be disruptive near bedrooms or living areas.
Is the Smart Power Tech Phantom Worth It?
If you’re seeking a low-cost, smart-enabled heat pump and can live with slower heating and limited timer control, the Phantom 270L delivers solid value. It’s good for predictable daily usage where recovery time isn’t critical. However, for households with high or unpredictable hot water demand—or those looking to maximise off-peak energy use—its heating power and single timer could prove limiting.

Reviews from Australians who have installed SPT Heat Pumps
Happy with everything this unit does. It is quiet, efficient and looks great. Very reliable so far.
Heat Pump brand has worked without problem.
The display screen is simple to use and the app provides added functionality if we're ever away, or if decide we need to use the booster element. From the time we received the quote, the installation occurred 2 days later without any surprise costs. After sales support has also been great when I needed assistance to change the default temp setting. I was provided clear instructions that worked.
Unfortunately installation could not go ahead with HiTech quoted SPT brand, Therefore I engaged another company they installed slightly larger capacity Smart Lifestyle brand with similar features. So I can not objectively comment on the SPT brand.
seems like a great product and the app is easy to use
The tank looks great and I am a big fan of the phone compatibility which has enabled me to save more money.
Stoked with my new SPT heat pump from HiTech.. Top-notch service and the most efficient unit around. Give these legends a call!
